The Story Behind Artful Soul Care

I believe our stories matter. They shape how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and often how we understand God, the world, and our place in it. The journey that led me to become a counselor has been, in many ways, a journey of learning to understand my own story.

Like you, I have faced difficulties and trials of various kinds. My own healing journey has shaped not only who I am as a person, but also the kind of counselor I hope to be.

The first time I went to counseling, I didn’t even know I needed it. As a college student, a trusted mentor encouraged me to seek counseling about childhood wounds I had never really faced. So I did.

Honestly, I didn’t fully trust my first counselor. Beginning counseling felt vulnerable and uncertain. But over time, through different seasons of life, I continued to do my own healing work through counseling. Gradually, I discovered that bringing my story into the light—especially the confusing and painful parts—made room for clarity, compassion, and hope. I grew to see and relate to myself, others, and God more deeply and authentically.

I’m not sure what brings you here today, but I do know what it feels like to hurt. I know what it means to feel alone, confused, and unsure whether you can trust another person with your story. Life doesn’t always make sense. That is what led me to first see a counselor, to eventually study counseling, and now to walk with others who feel similar ways.

I have found that healing rarely happens in isolation. As I allowed trusted people to know me more fully, even in the places I most wanted to hide, I found strength I didn’t know I had. I also found a deeper confidence that even when I cannot make sense of my own story, I can rest in the One who holds all things together. His presence has met me in suffering, and His steadfast love continues to bring healing, redemption, and beauty in places that once felt broken.

Artful Soul Care was born out of my own healing journey. I hope that others will find deep healing and an anchored faith to withstand the storms that come their way.

Artful Soul Care is rooted in the belief that healing often begins when we courageously engage with our stories and allow someone to walk alongside us with compassion and care.

Why “Artful Soul Care”?

My short answer: Nope. You do not have to feel like an artist or live up to any expectation to make something beautiful.

I believe every person has been gifted with the capacity for creative expression. Creativity is one of the ways we make meaning of our lives. When we engage with our God-given creativity, it often gives us a language for experiences that are difficult to name with words alone.

Writing, sketching, and other creative practices have led to deep healing for me personally, and I’ve also witnessed others find meaning through these and other creative practices. Creativity often leads to expressing things that can’t yet be voiced and opens doors to deeper understanding.

When it feels appropriate, I may invite you to explore your story creatively—but always at your own pace and in ways that feel comfortable for you. Expressive arts in counseling isn’t about the final product of the art itself, but rather about the process of engaging meaningfully with your lived experiences. It might involve writing, reflecting on an image, noticing what a piece of music stirs in you, exploring a meaningful scene from a film, or simply using colors and shapes to express something that words cannot yet hold.

I also happen to be an artist at heart and a professional mixed-media encaustic artist, so the name reflects a bit of who I am and how I relate to others and the world around me.

Whether we use creativity often or not at all, my hope is the same: that together we create a space where your story can be explored with honesty, curiosity, and compassion. I would be honored to walk alongside you as you discover healing, renewed hope, and perhaps even a deeper understanding of the story that is still unfolding.
